The electroscope

We can argue that electroscope is the first charged particle detector. In a sensitive electroscope, a thin gold leaf kept in a charged material with proper insulation. The equilibrium position of the gold leaf and the rate at which this position changes is determined by the charge on the conductor and the rate at which ions are produced in the gas. But these electroscopes are not that much sensitive to detect the presence of single particles.
